It Is Finished!

Thousands of years ago, God instituted a means to cover man’s sins. God set up the sacrificial system and for many years that is all the people of Israel knew. In Genesis 22, Abraham is told to sacrifice his son Isaac. God then intervenes and provides a ram to take the place of Isaac. In the books of the law, God showed in great detail how to perform the sacrifices. It was a bloody, graphic way of doing things, but that was the only plan of redemption that the Jews had seen. The high priest would enter in once a year to offer a sacrifice for his sins, then he would offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. Israel would wait in great fear and anxiety to see if God would accept the sacrifice. If the priest came out of the Holy of Holies alive, they knew they were safe for one more year.

Many, many lambs have been sacrificed since the Old Testament days. But, two thousand years ago, the Lamb of God came to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He publicly proclaimed His mission and His reason for coming. While suffering shame, harassment, and pain, he continued on with His ministry. Others were expecting Him to be the King of Kings and destroy the wicked and set up a kingdom. It did not happen that way, though. He gave up His life and the Deliverer, the Ruler, the Prince, the King died like every other human.

However, three days later our High Priest emerged out of the grave and showed the entire world that the sacrifice had been accepted. No longer would a year-to-year sacrifice have to be made. This Priest offered the sacrifice of Himself once and for all (Hebrews 10:10). Now that the plan of redemption is an eternal one, we no longer have to worry about whether or not we can be accepted by God. God said in His holy Word that we can be accepted in the beloved, which is Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:6).
