Compassion for Corinth

When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he didn’t jump right on their faults. He didn’t go straight to their fornication or misuse of spiritual gifts. He didn’t run to the cultural offerings of their day, and he didn’t start the letter with the Lord’s Supper or even the future resurrection…

When Paul wrote to a very imperfect church filled with very imperfect people yet was a genuine church of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he told them who they were and what they had in Christ. No big name was more important than any little name; Paul or Peter, Apollos or anyone else, in Christ all were the same. He didn’t beat them up with who he was and what he knew, he put his arm on their shoulder and said, “I’ll get to that other stuff soon enough, and I can get stern when I need to (look at Galatia), but let’s start with the basics—let’s take a trip to Calvary.”

Christian, don’t look for someone to tell you why you need to find Jesus. No. Find someone who will love you with a genuine love, though imperfect in this life, who will walk alongside you, hold your hand along the way, show you why from the Bible, with all the compassion of a weak and broken vessel, who says, “Come with me; let’s go find Jesus together.”
